Abortion

British Docs: Abortion Causes Mental Health Problems, Raises Suicide RiskLondon, England (LifeNews.com) -- Doctors in England testifying before the British House of Commons said abortion is a serious risk to a woman's mental health and can make her six times more likely to consider committing suicide. The doctors cited medical studies backing up their assertions as they commented on a bill to make the information available to women. Dr. Trevor Stammers, who practices at St. George's University of London and teaches medicine there, said he supported the measure to make women aware of the risks and dangers associated with abortion. He said that in 26 years of medical practice, all of which come after Britain legalized abortion in 1967, he has seen numerous women come to him with physical or mental health problems resulting from their abortion. "The most recent research has shown very clearly that abortion presents a serious risk to the long-term mental health of women and why it is therefore important to know which women are being offered abortion on mental health grounds," he told lawmakers, according to a report in the Evening Standard newspaper. Dr. Robert Balfour, a consultant gynecologist, agreed with the analysis and pointed to a study of 5,000 women in Finland conducted between 1987 and 2000 showing that those who had an abortion after an unplanned pregnancy were six times more likely to commit suicide than women who carried their baby to term. The newspaper reported him saying that evidence for mental health problems following an abortion is apparent in his hometown in South Wales. Balfour indicated that there were more psychiatric admissions and suicides among women who had abortions than those who gave birth.

Family Friendly Restaurants

One of our special friends and volunteers, Sondra Bradford has started a new project. We think this is a great idea! Check it out: Family Friendly Charlotte (http://www.familyfriendlycharlotte.com/) is dedicated to taking the whining out of dining by offering reviews of area restaurants based on family friendly criteria. Want to know whether a restaurant has a changing table in the Women’s AND the Men’s restrooms? Do they offer healthy meal options for kids? Do you need to bring your own crayons, or does the restaurant offer entertainment for the kids? Arm yourself with the information you need to know before taking children out to eat!

Increased Abstinence Funding

House Democrats Increase Abstinence Education, Family Planning FundsWashington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- It wasn't supposed to be this way. When abortion advocates were successful in handing control of Congress to the Democrats after the 2006 elections, their allies in Congress were supposed to use their newfound power to decrease federal funds for abstinence education. Instead, they increased it. Thursday afternoon, members of a House Appropriations subcommittee voted to increase funding for the Community Based Abstinence Education program (CBAE) by $27.8 million, to $141 million. CBAE funds groups that encourage students to engage in abstinence rather than promote the use of birth control. According to Congressional Quarterly, Appropriations Chairman David Obey, a pro-abortion Wisconsin Democrat, said the abstinence vote was an olive branch to Republicans to help get their support for the various spending bills Congress approves annually to fund the federal government. Other Democrats, such as pro-abortion Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr., of Illinois, said they were willing to accept more money for abstinence education to be able to get GOP support for their other spending measures that is increasing the cost of the bills more than the president wants. Valerie Huber of the National Abstinence Education Association applauded the vote and told the Washington Times. That abstinence education "is a public health message that deserves to be continued."

Banquet News

We are looking for Table Hosts for our banquet planned for November 8, 2007. Table Hosts are persons who agree to invite enough of their friends or associates to fill a table at the banquet. The requirements for hosting a table are simple. An individual or couple volunteering to serve as a table host would:

* be interested in and supportive of the ministry of Lois' Lodge;

* invite 8-9 carefully selected guests to fill a table of 10 (including yourself);

* provide a list of guests at least three weeks before the dinner to the
reservation coordinator;

* faithfully pray for the dinner in the weeks preceeding the event;

* attend the dinner's table host prayer dessert to be held several weeks prior to
the event.

There is no financial commitment on the part of table hosts. Dinners are underwritten by Dinner Underwriters who pay for all invited guests and hosts. The role of the table host is simply to fill a table with invited guests. This is a great opportunity to invite friends, business associates, and community leaders who may not know about our ministry. Here, they can hear first hand about the ministry through our program presentation and client testimonies.
