MTV True Life Looking for Young Women Making Adoption Plans

MTV True Life: I’m Placing My Baby For Adoption

Are you pregnant and planning to make your child available for adoption?
Then MTV would like to hear from you.

MTV’s award-winning documentary series, “True Life,” is producing a new episode about young women who are making adoption plans for their soon-to-be-born children. We’re looking for expectant mothers who would like to share their stories with young people across the country. Our goal -- as with all episodes of “True Life” -- is to help MTV’s young audience understand why so many young women make the choice to place their babies for adoption, and to help de-stigmatize this choice. We will treat the young women who participate in this documentary with respect, dignity and empathy.

If you or someone you know might be interested in hearing more about this documentary, please contact us at:

“True Life” is a documentary series that’s been on MTV for more than 10 years. It chronicles the stories of young people in all kinds of situations, from global and political issues like war and natural disaster to issues of personal struggle like mental illness and family matters.

“True Life” is not a reality show. Our producers follow strict ethical guidelines and carefully avoid influencing our subjects’ stories. It is also not a news show – there is no host, reporter, or narrator. We allow our subjects to tell their own stories in their own voices.

Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Campaign of NC

URGENT: LEGISLATIVE ACTION ALERT
ADOLESCENT PREGNANCY PREVENTION CAMPAIGN OF NORTH CAROLINA

Wednesday, June 11, 2008

CONTACT MEMBERS OF THE SENATE TO REVERSE NEGATIVE ASPECTS OF THE HOUSE'S VERSION OF THE BUDGET BILL -- HB 2436.

The Senate is finalizing its version of the budget, so please contact senators and ask them to save prevention programs and initiatives. IF YOU DO NOT ACT NOW TO CONVINCE SENATORS TO REVERSE THE ACTIONS TAKEN BY THE HOUSE, THIS MAY BE THE LAST OPPORTUNITY THIS SESSION TO HELP SAVE PREVENTION PROGRAMS AND INITIATIVES!

ASK SENATORS TO INCLUDE $250,000 IN ADDITIONAL FUNDS FOR PREGNANCY PREVENTION/ADOLESCENT PARENTING PROGRAMS IN THE SENATE'S BUDGET BILL.

The House's budget does not include the $250,000 requested for pregnancy prevention programs -- The results of which will mean prevention programs in New Hanover, Anson, and Person Counties -- programs that are up for renewal of grant funds -- will be cut. In addition, other programs that have been approved for funding will not be funded. To reverse the House's action, the Senate will have to include $250,000 in its version of the budget bill.
ASK SENATORS TO INCLUDE $375,000 IN ADDITIONAL FUNDS FOR SCHOOL-BASED/SCHOOL-LINKED HEALTH CENTERS.

The House's budget does not include the $375,000 requested for school-based/school-linked health centers, which means school health centers will not receive a cost of operations increase in order to sustain the centers.
Yes, the House's budget contains $250,000 in non-recurring funds for start-up grants for new school health centers, but that money will not help existing centers. Bringing on new centers without increasing the base funding for the centers will simply reduce funding for the existing centers once the new centers are on-line.
In addition, the House's budget proposal contains $2,700,000 Recurring & $2,300,000 Non-recurring for Aid to Safety Net Community Health Centers --- This money will be used to fund a competitive grants program, for which the school-based/school-linked health centers could compete, but these funds cannot be used solely for operational purposes and the school-health centers need operational funds.
ASK SENATORS TO REVERSE THE ACTIONS TAKEN BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TO MAKE EXISTING FUNDS FOR PREGNANCY PREVENTION NON-RECURRING.

Current base state funding ($1.79 million) for all pregnancy prevention programs has been made non-recurring in the House's version of the budget, which means that the base recurring funding has been made one-time money. (Item #49 in House's Money report) This also means that prevention advocates will have to struggle to retain this money each and every year in the same manner that we have to fight to retain the block grant/federal funds. At a time when the programs are struggling to stay alive financially, such action may mean the demise of many programs as staff may leave because of the uncertainly of the funding!
PLEASE MAKE YOUR CONTACTS TODAY AND THROUGHOUT THE REMAINDER OF THE WEEK. THIS IS TRULY AN URGENT CALL FOR YOUR ASSISTANCE.

Compiled by Patricia Yancey
Director of Public Education

To God be the Glory

I had an epiphany this AM. We have gotten about 10 applications for the maternity home over the past couple of days. (This is causing us to run around like a bunch of chickens with our heads cut off.) The state has run out of money so there are no State Maternity Funds available for new clients until July 1 when the new fiscal year begins for the state. I'll bet that's why we are getting alot of these referrals. I think that God is pleased that Lois' Lodge, unlike other maternity homes in our area, is there to minister to girls irregardless of their eligibility for these funds. This is accomplished through the faithful churches, individuals and families that support this ministry. Thanks to each one of you and to God for the provision which enables us to accomplish His work at Lois' Lodge.

More Than a Quarter of Adults in NYC have Herpes

More than a quarter of adults in New York City are infected with the virus that causes genital herpes, according a study by the city's health department. The study found that 26 percent of city residents have the virus -- 7 percentage points above the national average.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has a website that talks about how you get herpes. They report that the viruses that cause herpes can be found in and released from the sores that the viruses cause, but they also are released between outbreaks from skin that does not appear to have a sore. Generally, a person can only get the herpes infection during sexual contact with someone who has a genital HSV-2 infection. Transmission can occur from an infected partner who does not have a visible sore and may not know that he or she is infected.

Genital herpes causes recurrent painful genital sores in many adults, and herpes infection can be severe in people with suppressed immune systems. Regardless of severity of symptoms, genital herpes frequently causes psychological distress in people who know they are infected. In addition, genital HSV can lead to potentially fatal infections in babies. As a consequence, it is important that women avoid contracting herpes during pregnancy because a newly acquired infection during late pregnancy poses a greater risk of transmission to the baby. If a woman has active genital herpes at delivery, a cesarean delivery is usually performed. The CDC also reports that herpes may play a role in the spread of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Herpes can make people more susceptible to HIV infection, and it can make HIV-infected individuals more infectious.

Genital ulcer diseases can occur in both male and female genital areas that are covered or protected by a latex condom, as well as in areas that are not covered. Correct and consistent use of latex condoms can reduce the risk of genital herpes, but there is no treatment that can cure herpes.

I react everytime I see a Valtrex commercial. The commercials glamorize and minimize the affects of this terrible illness. I have seen the reality of herpes in working with teens and women experiencing unplanned pregnancies. My first encounter with the disease was with a 14 year girl. This girl will have a life time challenge dealing with the symptoms and ramifications of herpers. The CDC tells us that the "surest way to avoid transmission of sexually transmitted diseases, including genital herpes, is to abstain from sexual contact, or to be in a long-term mutually monogamous relationship with a partner who has been tested and is known to be uninfected." This is also the surest way to avoid an unintended pregnancy.

I wish there was some way to get society, particularly young people, to open their eyes and understand the devestating consequences that can occur through the choices that they make......

"Choose Life" is a Bad Choice According to Planned Parenthood

Below is an email which Planned Parenthood sent out last week. They are opposed to the "Choose Life" license plates.

Planned Parenthood, who claims that they promote abortion as a "neutral option" gets alot of funding from the government and other sources. I think it is a shame that they are not willing to support an opportunity for women to hear another point of view regarding their choices. And, quite frankly it is amazing to me that this huge conglomerate would feel so threatened by the grass roots movement of crisis pregnancy centers. Information gleaned from the Planned Parenthood annual report reveals that during its 2005-2006 fiscal year, the nonprofit Planned Parenthood Federation of America performed a record 264,943 abortions, attained a high profit of $55.8 million and received record taxpayer funding of $305.3 million. For the year July 1, 2005, through June 30, 2006, Planned Parenthood received $345.1 million in clinic income, $305.3 million in taxpayer funding and $212.2 million in donations. Total income reached $902.8 million while total expenses came to $847.0 million, leaving a profit of $55.8 million. Most crisis pregnancy centers are managed and maintained by a very limited staff and groups of dedicated volunteers. They do not generate profits through the services that they provide. Their primary mission is to help women to understand that abortion is not their only choice when they experience an unplanned pregnancy.

This is the caution that Planned Parenthood gives on their website regarding "crisis pregnancy centers":

"Beware of so-called "crisis pregnancy centers" that are anti-abortion. These fake clinics advertise free pregnancy testing to lure women into their anti-choice agenda.

Crisis pregnancy centers:

* may perform your pregnancy tests without medical supervision. (I happen to know that the crisis pregnancy center in Charlotte has medical personnel on their staff and serving as volunteers).

* won't give you complete and correct information about all options.

* may try to frighten you with misleading films and pictures that are designed to keep you from choosing abortion.

* will lie to you about the medical and emotional effects of abortion. (This is what Planned Parenthood says on their own website about the emotional effects of abortion- Some women experience anger, regret, guilt, or sadness for a short time. Sudden hormonal changes may intensify these feelings. You are more likely to have long-term emotional problems after abortion if you had emotional problems before your pregnancy. You are more likely to experience serious regrets if you have strong religious feelings against it. Be sure to examine your moral concerns before choosing abortion. You may want to seek counseling counseling is available before and after abortion.)

* may tell you that you are not pregnant even if you are, to fool you into continuing your pregnancy without knowing— the delay would make abortion more risky and keep you from getting prenatal care. (This is an outragious accusation. If any of you know of a crisis pregnancy center that would something this unethical please let me know. I will lead the charge to put them out of business.)

* may discourage you from using the most reliable methods of birth control."

I worked for a county government operated Department of Social Services for years and could never understand why it was OK for social workers, probation offices, lawyers, etc. to recommend that a woman have an abortion while anyone who suggested that abortion may not be the best choice was judged as pushing their political or religious agenda. At that time I was "pro-choice" and did not have clarity as to my personal spiritual condition and beliefs. On one occassion I accompanied a young teen mom to a crisis pregnancy center because she wanted to hear a point of view that might differ from that offered by all of the "professionals" in her life who told her that her only choice in her circumstance was abortion. My experience did not support what I had heard about these kinds of settings. We were not shown disgusting images of aborted fetuses and did not experience any sense of being judged because of our personal views. I was impressed with the level of caring and professionalism which we experienced. It is interesting to note that as a result of this contact with the crisis pregnancy center I was called into my supervisors office to address a complaint which had been registered against me by a social worker who also worked for the agency. She felt that it was inappropriate for me to allow this young gal, a resident of the group home that I administered, to go to "one of those places" (the crisis pregnancy center).

If you are truly "pro-choice" why wouldn't you be open to other perspectives on the best approach to managing an unplanned pregnancy. The way I look at it is- if you are not open to allowing women experiencing this type of crisis to hear from those that do not believe abortion is a "neutral option", you are not really pro-choice and may actually be guilty of exactly what you are accusing crisis pregnancy centers of- promoting your own political agenda.

Most women who choose to have an abortion do so because they believe that they do not have other options. According to Sharon L. Camp, president and CEO of the Guttmacher Institute (the Guttmacher Institute is reportedly the scientific research division of Planned Parenthood), “Behind almost every abortion in the United States is an unplanned and unwanted pregnancy. Abortion is not an isolated event in a woman’s life. It is a last resort for a woman who is faced with a crisis pregnancy she did not want or plan for.”

Lois’ Lodge often works with crisis pregnancy centers to offer women experiencing an unplanned pregnancy the resources needed to sustain their pregnancy and to develop a plan for their own future and future of their child. Unplanned and unwanted pregnancies do not need to result in an abortion in order to terminate the child’s life. There are other options. Abortion is not a woman’s last resort.

As long as Roe vs Wade is still in effect I personally would never advocate for eliminating Planned Parenthood as a resource for women in need of birth control or an abortion resource. I am unapologetically pro-life because of my religious convictions but I recognize that not everyone has the same beliefs as I do. For me it is more important to help others understand the source of my convictions than to try to convince them that abortion itself is a bad choice. Actually, I believe that it is usually futile to try to help others to value preserving life and/or sexual purity when these values are not a part of their spiritual beliefs. Sometimes I think I am more "pro-choice" than those that define themselves as such. Women need to be able to make informed decisions. That is why they also should have an opportunity to visit a crisis pregnancy center in order to hear another perspective, a perspective which says that abortion is not a "neutral option". How is that not offering women "a choice"? Debbie

THIS IS THE EMAIL WHICH WAS SENT OUT BY PLANNED PARENTHOOD. IF YOU VALUE THE SERVICES PROVIDED BY CRISIS PREGNANCY CENTERS PLEASE LET YOUR LEGISLATOR KNOW THAT YOU SUPPORT THE "CHOOSE LIFE LICENSE PLATE":

Dear

The North Carolina House Transportation committee is considering a bill TODAY that would bring "Choose Life" license plates to North Carolina.

If you are receiving this email, YOUR legislator is on the House Transportation committee and needs to hear from you. PLEASE TAKE ACTION RIGHT NOW -- this hearing is TODAY!

These license plates are specialty plates that bear an anti-choice message. Individuals who wish to purchase the plate pay a fee above the cost of a standard license plate.

The revenue generated from the sale would then be funneled to non-profit, anti-choice organizations, including so called "crisis pregnancy centers" that promise comprehensive medical advice and services but deliver anti-choice propaganda. Any organization that mentions abortion as a neutral option - including counseling or referrals - is prohibited from receiving any of the funds.

Let your legislator know that you believe the state has no business sanctioning only certain political views of its citizens and supporting organizations that deny women information, counseling or referrals to the full range of reproductive options!
Please take immediate action by writing to YOUR legislator!
